By Roger Tate
I bought the Alpen 12x50 binos last year after hunting season so I have not used them yet in a hunting situation but I have used them while sighting in rifles and they are amazing! Crystal clear and very bright in the late afternoon. I bought them after going to a gun show and trying out a pair at the table of an optics dealer. He sold many types of binos including Leupold and he said the pair of Alpens I looked through were his personal hunting binos. This from a man who could have used any binos and gotten them at wholesale price. Also, a local gun dealer has a set that he says he prefers over his Steiners and Nikons. Pretty solid recommendations I thought!
Some people think this size bino is too large for hunting but I bought them mainly to use in a shoot house overlooking bean fields so weight is not an issue. These replaced a set of Barska Huntmaster 8x42 binos for this purpose as I wanted more magnification. The Alpens weigh about the same as the Barskas even with the larger lenses and are much clearer and brighter. The Barskas are good binos for the price, but the Alpens are far superior as they should be for triple the price.
Buy the best binos you can afford. Optics is one area that you get what you pay for. Great, cheap optics just don't exist. However, from most of my research, the $300-500 range seems to be the sweet spot in binos. Less money gets you noticeably less quality. More money and you get into a quickly decreasing rate of return for your money. Better quality can be had, but you will pay a tremendous amount to get that top 2-3% in quality that most people's eyes can't differentiate anyway.
